Iguanas camoflauge in Pipa’s scenery

Our well known reptile of Jurassic appearance may look frightening, but its docile and reserved temperament make it a great companion. Its size, up to two meters with a tail occupying two thirds the length of its body, can be intimidating. Its strong body and long fingers facilitate life in its habitat of trees; its deep green color, which helps it hide from its predators, turns darker and more opaque with age. These animals co-habit well with humans, and for this reason were the first reptiles to be domesticated.

They need wide areas to move around in, preferably hot and very sunny; they are diurnal creatures and feed on insects during the first part of life, turning vegetarian as adults. Iguanas require a humid climate to prevent their skin from becoming over dry.

Even considering all this peaceful sociability, it is not advisable to approach too close. The male can lift its head to expose its gills and "ask for permission" by lightly whipping its tail or even biting if perturbed.

In Praia da Pipa it is common to meet one of these exotic reptiles on branches, on the beaches and on roofs, where they recharge their solar batteries in order to keep their cold blood warm.

The commercialization or domestication of this species or any other wild animals is prohibited.

To admire free-roaming fauna in their natural habitat is to respect the ecosystem and enjoy nature’s beauty in perfect harmony.
