The interesting and positive side of Frescobol "Beach Tennis" is that it is a non-competitive sport with no winners or losers. This is a friendly game with no opponents. Players cooperate with one another in a mutual commitment to win.

Created on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro in the 20th Century, Frescobol is played by two or more players and is similar to tennis, but with rackets adapted in wood to make them water resistant. Moreover, opposite to tennis, the objective is to hit the ball in such a way as to facilitate the other player’s return.

This is a beach sport which can be played anywhere, preferably on soft sand or near the water so as not to lose track of the ball, but caution is advised to avoid injuring nearby bathers or passersby with the ball. A protective net can also be set up behind each player.

This is a popular sport because it is easy to learn and involves minimal investment: a pair of rackets and a good quality ball can be acquired for approximately R$40. The objective of the game is to hit the ball in the direction of the other player’s racket in the spirit of cooperation, without letting it fall to the ground. The length of time the ball stays in the air and the force with which it is hit are the factors which distinguish the amateur from the professional.

Frescobol is ideal for children, youths and the elderly, providing pleasant recreation and exercise, and making use of beautiful surroundings as its "courts," i.e., the beaches.

Pipa offers many beaches for practicing this sport, amongst them: Praia dos Golfinhos (Dolphin Beach), Praia do Amor (Lovers’ Beach), Praia do Madeiro (Madeiro Beach), and finally, Praia do Centro (Central Beach). These beaches are ideal because they are sheltered from strong winds, and spacious enough so as not to disturb bathers.
